At its fifth session, which was held in Geneva from 28 May to 1 June 2001, the Commission decided that the substantive theme during the inter-sessional period 2001-2003 would be "Technology development and capacity-building for competitiveness in a digital society". The work of the Commission is carried out through 3 panels, which will address diffrent aspects of the main substantive theme. The findings and policy recommendations to emerge from the various panels will be considered by the Commission at its sixth session in May 2003.
UNCTAD, through CSTD has devoted two years to issues related to biotechnology. I recommend for your reading a synopsis of the area "Key issues in Biotechnology". One important finding was that the public did not have enough balanced information and that both scientists and journalists needed to do a better job. Scientists were overly technical and journalists overly sensational.
UNCTAD thgouh CSTD also spent two years identifying and drawing up guidelines for national ICT stretegies. These guidelines have been forwarded to the newly established UN ICT Task Force.
