Basel Convention on the control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and its Disposal (1992) 
In the late 1980s, a tightening of environmental regulations in industrialized countries led to a dramatic rise in the cost of hazardous waste disposal. Searching for cheaper ways to get rid of the wastes, “toxic traders” began shipping hazardous waste to developing countries and to Eastern Europe. When this activity was revealed, international outrage led to the drafting and adoption of the Basel Convention.

Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety to the Convention on Biological Diversity (2000)
The Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity adopted a supplementary agreement to the Convention known as the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety on 29 January 2000. The Protocol seeks to protect biological diversity from the potential risks posed by living modified organisms resulting from modern biotechnology.

Convention on Biological Diversity (1992) 
One of the key agreements adopted at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio was the Convention on Biological Diversity. This pact among the vast majority of the world's governments sets out commitments for maintaining the world's ecological underpinnings as we go about the business of economic development. The Convention establishes three main goals: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits from the use of genetic resources.

International Undertaking on Plant Genetic Resources (1983) 
The International Undertaking is the first comprehensive international agreement dealing with plant genetic resources for food and agriculture. It was adopted by the FAO Conference in 1983, as an instrument to promote international harmony in matters regarding access to plant genetic resources for food and agriculture

International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (2001)
This legally-binding Treaty covers all plant genetic resources relevant for food and agriculture. It is in harmony with the Convention on Biological Diversity.
